Basswood Care Guide
Basswood Plantation Shutter Care & Maintenance Guide
Simple steps to keep your basswood plantation shutters looking beautiful and performing well for years to come.
1. Regular Dusting
- Weekly: Gently dust louvers with a microfiber cloth, soft feather duster, or a vacuum brush attachment.
- Tilt slats downward to clean each side evenly and prevent buildup.
- Avoid rough cloths or paper towels that could scratch the smooth basswood finish.
2. Deep Cleaning
- Every few months: Wipe the shutters with a slightly damp, soft cloth, then immediately dry with a towel.
- For fingerprints or light dirt, mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water – never use harsh detergents.
- Wipe gently with the grain of the wood, then dry completely to protect the natural basswood fibers.
- Avoid spraying water directly onto the shutters or soaking the louvers.
3. Protect from Moisture & Heat
- Basswood is a natural, kiln-dried hardwood – durable yet sensitive to excessive humidity.
- Keep shutters away from direct water contact (like showers, sinks, or constantly steamy areas).
- Avoid exposing shutters to high heat or steam vents, which may cause the wood to warp over time.
4. Operate Gently
- Use the tilt rod or hidden tilt mechanism with light, steady pressure.
- If a louver feels stiff, do not force it; check for dust buildup in the side frame first.
- Always close the louvers before opening or closing the panels to reduce strain on hinges.
5. Sunlight & Finish Protection
- Rotate or adjust louvers occasionally to distribute sunlight evenly and reduce fading.
- For painted or stained finishes, apply a furniture-grade wood polish or UV protectant once or twice a year to maintain a rich, even sheen.
- Never use products containing ammonia, alcohol, or silicone, as these can dull the finish.
6. Check Hardware
- Inspect hinges, screws, and magnets every 6–12 months.
- Tighten gently if needed and replace worn hardware with matching components.
- Lightly lubricate hinges with a small drop of clear, non-staining oil if panels start to squeak.
Pro Tips
- Stick to wood-safe cleaners only– basswood has a smooth, fine grain that can absorb strong chemicals.
- Use a dry microfiber cloth for day-to-day upkeep and only damp-clean when necessary.
- Keep indoor humidity moderate (ideally 40–60%) to protect the stability and shape of the shutters.
